As a child I had pain in my small toe on my right foot. All shoes bothered me. The first spot to wear out on all my shoes was the right pinky toe. At about age 45, the toe started twisting and causing pain. After a few years, half the nail broke off. The pain got increasingly worse, especially in cold wet weather.
